Extra Advice To Support Hull Families This Winter

Citizens Advice Hull and East Riding (CAHER) and Reckitt, the consumer goods manufacturer, have announced a partnership that aims to support more people in Hull through the cost of living and energy crises.

Reckitt, which traces its roots to Hull, is supporting CAHER to increase its adviceline capacity this winter, to provide income maximisation, housing and debt advice, as well information on energy efficiency (based on Reckitt’s Oh Yes! Net Zero initiative in Hull).

CAHER currently receives 2,000 calls per month on its adviceline, and the volume is expected to triple over the coming months.

Reckitt and CAHER will also work with Hull City Council and other local voluntary sector organisations on an energy efficiency education campaign (linked to Oh Yes! Net Zero) and host local events to strengthen community support available in Hull.

Tracy Wharvell, CEO of CAHER, said: “It is predicted with the new energy price cap, between 40 – 60% of Hull households will be fuel poor. Reckitt’s helpline investment will mean we can support the growing number of local residents who are facing fuel poverty for the first time. We continue with our ongoing recruitment drive for volunteers, who form a vital part of the work we do in our local communities, but with a new phoneline adviser, and associated energy efficiency education campaigns, we know we will have a wider impact.”

Melissa Rackham, Reckitt’s Oh Yes! Net ZeroCommunity Engagement Manager said: “Reckitt wants to provide direct support to Hull communities through this difficult time. We know how important it is to support local organisations focussed on making a difference. Our CAHER support aligns with our existing Oh Yes! initiative plus efforts to drive the region’s economic future through Opportunity Humber.”

Jim Doyle, Chair of CAHER, said: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Reckitt on the cost of living and energy challenges here in the city. Its support allows us to identify these problems earlier for people, reducing the risk of them becoming catastrophic and life-changing. The extra adviser will support a further 1,500 people in Hull.”
