Our new Bridlington base heralds the start of a new era
A new era is dawning for Citizens Advice Hull & East Riding as we open our new office in the heart of Bridlington.
Our new base in Manor Street will provide us with scope to expand our services and create a hub to work in partnership with other local organisations – to empower residents of Bridlington and surrounding areas with free, confidential, independent and impartial advice on a wide range of issues including debt, benefits, housing, employment, relationships and family.
Did you know we’re an independent charity that has been supporting local communities for more than 85 years? Check out the video below for some amazing facts and figures about our local services and our new seaside home.
The former Barclays Bank building is part of Bridlington’s heritage. The site once housed the practice of Francis Johnson, a renowned local architect known for his classical restorations and contribution to East Yorkshire’s built environment. His firm operated from Manor Street in the 1930s before moving to High Street, embedding the building in the town’s architectural legacy.
The building has been leased to Citizens Advice Hull & East Riding by the Lords Feoffees, whose charitable mission to benefit the town dates back nearly 400 years. Now it is being converted into a light, spacious facility which will provide a perfect new home for staff and volunteers and a comfortable, welcoming environment for clients.
The premises were built in 1800 and were known as New Buildings as it was originally two separate properties. Sir Henry Boynton (9th Baronet) of Burton Agnes Hall bought them in around 1811. He joined the two properties, re-fronted them in stone and inserted the bow windows on all floors. He lived there until around 1832, when he made Burton Agnes Hall his main residence, but retained his townhouse in what was the fashionable Quay area of Bridlington. His mother, Lady Mary, died there in 1815. There are portraits of her in Burton Agnes Hall.
Coincidentally, Francis Johnson was the architect responsible for the restoration of the Long Gallery at Burton Agnes Hall.
We support thousands of clients a year from across the East Riding in person in Bridlington at a weekly drop-in session on Tuesdays and pre-arranged appointments on other days. The new office opens for drop-in clients on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.
